Glossary
One-sentence definitions first, then how each concept works in Salesforce and how Rowhouse handles it. The words are the ones the product and its Grid Guide use.

Change set
A change set is Salesforce’s point-and-click way to move metadata — custom fields, Lightning pages, Custom Metadata records — from one org to a connected one, usually from a sandbox to production.
Read →Child table
A child table is a tab of related records under a row in a Rowhouse grid, such as an account’s contacts, shown as a full grid of its own with search, editing and its own Save bar.
Read →Custom Metadata
Custom Metadata is Salesforce’s way to store an app’s settings as metadata rather than as data, so the settings move between orgs in a change set or a deployment, the way code does.
Read →Display rule
A display rule is a test and a look in a Rowhouse grid: when a field meets the test, the cell or the whole row changes fill, text color, weight or icon, and the Display Key says what it means.
Read →Encrypted field
An encrypted field is a field protected by Salesforce Shield Platform Encryption. Rowhouse shows and edits it as usual, but doesn’t sort, filter, group, search or total it.
Read →Field-level security (FLS)
Field-level security is Salesforce’s per-field access control: for each field, a user’s profile and permission sets decide whether they can read it, edit it, or neither.
Read →Formula column
A formula column is a column a Rowhouse grid works out for each row, written in Salesforce’s formula syntax, without adding a formula field to the object.
Read →Grid Edit Log
The Grid Edit Log is Rowhouse’s audit trail: an object in your org where a grid that logs writes one entry per field it changes, with the old and new value, and entries for records it creates, deletes and restores.
Read →Lightning Locker and Lightning Web Security (LWS)
Lightning Locker and Lightning Web Security are the two security layers Salesforce runs Lightning components under, keeping each component’s code apart from the rest of the page. An org runs one or the other.
Read →Managed package (2GP)
A managed package is how an app installs into a Salesforce org as one versioned, upgradeable unit; a second-generation (2GP) package is built from source with the Salesforce CLI. Rowhouse will install as one.
Read →New row
A new row is a record added with a Rowhouse grid’s New button: it appears at the top of the grid with Salesforce’s defaults filled in, and is created when the user clicks Save.
Read →Related record’s field
A related record’s field is a Rowhouse column that names a field through lookups, as a report or a formula does — Account.Industry on a contact grid — and is edited on that related record.
Read →User mode
User mode is running a query or a save with the user’s own access — their object permissions, field-level security and sharing — rather than the system’s. Rowhouse runs every read and write this way.

Short definitions of the rest of the words you will meet on the Grid Admin tab, in the Grid Guide and on this site.
- Actionable mode
- The keyboard mode for using a link or button inside a cell: press Enter, then Tab to reach it; Esc returns to moving between cells.
- Apache-2.0
- The open-source license Rowhouse uses: free to use, change and redistribute, with a patent grant. It does not grant the Rowhouse name or logo, which are trademarks of Kugamon LLC.
- ARIA
- Labels and roles that tell screen readers what an element is — a grid, a row, a sorted column. Rowhouse’s table is an ARIA grid, and a tree grid when it is grouped.
- Cards
- The layout a grid switches to below 480 px of its own width: one card per record, with a Sort by menu in place of the column headers.
- Cell Type
- A column setting offered only in Setup that overrides how a column’s values show and edit. Leave it blank in almost all cases.
- Child total column
- A column on each parent row worked out from its related records — a count, or the sum, average, lowest or highest of a field — up to five per grid.
- Cursor
- Salesforce’s way of paging through a large query. One cursor holds up to 100,000 rows, which is why a grid reaches 100,000 rows by scrolling and no more.
- Customize Application
- A Salesforce admin permission. Saving, creating, cloning, archiving and restoring grids needs it as well as the Rowhouse admin permission set; Rowhouse cannot grant it.
- Display Key
- The button above a grid that lists what each display rule’s look means, with a sample of each.
- Fill down
- Ctrl+D (Cmd+D on a Mac): copy the top row of a selected range into the rows below it.
- Frozen columns
- Columns on the left that stay in place while the grid scrolls sideways: zero to five, set on the Grid Admin tab.
- Grid Action
- A screen flow, autolaunched flow, invocable Apex action or quick action that an admin adds to each row’s menu, to the selection bar, or both.
- Grid Configuration
- The Custom Metadata record that defines one grid: its object, sort, rows per page, height, frozen columns, record page lookup and what users can do. The grid’s columns, rules, filters, actions and child tables all point to it.
- Hard rules
- Rowhouse’s 29 engineering rules, each checked automatically where it can be — for example no global Apex, no callouts, no third-party JavaScript and no paid tier.
- Layout
- A user’s own view of a grid — columns, widths, sort, grouping and open rows — kept for them, and cleared with Reset layout.
- Namespace
- The prefix a managed package’s component names carry, keeping them apart from an org’s own. Rowhouse’s is planned as
rowhouseand not yet registered. - Range
- A rectangle of selected cells, made with Shift and the arrow keys, that can be copied, pasted, filled down or cleared.
- Record Page Field
- The lookup that makes a grid an editable related list: on a record page, the grid shows only the records whose lookup points to that page’s record.
- Save bar
- The bar that appears with unsaved changes, counting them, with Undo, Redo, Cancel and Save.
- Save Id
- The value shared by every Grid Edit Log entry written by one save, import, delete or action run, so they read as one change.
- Selection bar
- The bar shown when rows are ticked, with Update field, Delete, the grid’s actions and Clear.
- Sharing
- Salesforce’s record-level access: which records a user can see and edit. Every Rowhouse Apex class runs with sharing, so a grid shows only the records the user could see anyway.
- VPAT / ACR
- An accessibility conformance report: the document that states how a product meets an accessibility standard. Rowhouse has none yet.
- WCAG 2.2 AA
- The Web Content Accessibility Guidelines, version 2.2, at level AA. It is the target Rowhouse is built to, voluntarily; there is no certification or conformance report.

Free. Not freemium, not a trial, not a tier.
Install it, assign the permission sets, build your first grid on the Grid Admin tab. Everything else is in the Grid Guide inside the app.
