What is the Grid Edit Log?

The Grid Edit Log is Rowhouse’s audit trail: an object in your org where a grid that logs writes one entry per field it changes, with the old and new value, and entries for records it creates, deletes and restores.

In Salesforce

Salesforce’s Field History Tracking records changes to up to 20 chosen fields per object, wherever the change came from, and Shield’s Field Audit Trail keeps that history longer. Both record what changed on the record, not which tool made the change.

How Rowhouse handles it

Turn on Log Changes for a grid and every change it makes is written to Grid Edit Log in the same transaction: an Update entry per field with its old and new value, and Create, Delete, Restore and Action entries. Entries written together share a Save Id, and who and when are set by Salesforce. If an entry cannot be written, the change is not made either. Users can never edit or delete an entry, and entries are kept forever or for 90 days, 1, 2 or 7 years.

An example

In a contact clean-up grid that logs, one save that changes five fields writes five Update entries sharing one Save Id, and an import that creates three contacts writes three Create entries. A change to a related record’s field is logged against that record, and a Shield-encrypted field’s entry is written without its values.

FAQ

Grid Edit Log: questions

What is not logged?

Screen flows, changes made outside the grid, what a flow or Apex action itself changed, and later changes by your org’s triggers or flows. Only what happened is logged: a record that failed to save has no entry.

Who can read the log?

Users read their own entries, and others read an entry only as your sharing allows. To let an auditor read every entry, give them View All on Grid Edit Log in a permission set of your own. Rowhouse ships none, so reading the whole log is always a deliberate grant.

How much storage does it use?

About 2 KB of data storage per entry. A retention period other than Forever schedules a nightly clean-up that deletes older entries for good.

Free. Not freemium, not a trial, not a tier.

Install it, assign the permission sets, build your first grid on the Grid Admin tab. Everything else is in the Grid Guide inside the app.
