What is a new row?

A new row is a record added with a Rowhouse grid’s New button: it appears at the top of the grid with Salesforce’s defaults filled in, and is created when the user clicks Save.

In Salesforce

A list view’s New button opens Salesforce’s New form for the object, laid out as its page layout says, with a record type step when there is a choice. Each record is created on its own, when its form is saved.

How Rowhouse handles it

When the grid can hold the record as a row, New adds one at the top, saying New where a row number goes, with the owner, picklist and checkbox defaults and default values already in it — and, in a child table or on a record page, the link to that record. Save creates the new records first, then saves the grid’s other changes. When a row can’t hold the record — a required field that isn’t an editable column, a choice of record types, or inline edit turned off — New opens Salesforce’s own New form instead, and the saved record joins the grid.

Before it is saved

Undo takes a new row away again, and Cancel takes away every new row. A grey lock marks a field that can’t be set on a new record, required fields left blank are refused before anything is sent, and a new row has no actions, selection or child tables until it is saved. In a grid that logs its changes, each record created writes a Create entry.

FAQ

New row: questions

How many new rows can one save create?

Up to 200, in one insert in user mode. A row Salesforce refuses keeps its values and shows why.

Why does New open a form instead of a row?

A field every new record must have isn’t an editable column, you have more than one record type for the object, or the grid doesn’t allow inline editing. Add the field as an editable column to get a row.

Why is there no New button?

The grid’s Allow New Records setting — Create records with New on the Grid Admin tab — is off, or you can’t create the object’s records.
