What is a related record’s field?

A related record’s field is a Rowhouse column that names a field through lookups, as a report or a formula does — Account.Industry on a contact grid — and is edited on that related record.

In Salesforce

Reports and formulas reach across lookups with dot notation, such as Account.Owner.Email, but a list view shows and inline-edits only the object’s own fields. Showing a parent’s field beside each row usually means a formula field on the child object, which is read-only.

How Rowhouse handles it

A Rowhouse column can reach up to five lookups away. On the Grid Admin tab, choose the lookup (Account >) in the column’s Field list, then the field. Without a header the column is headed as a report heads it, Account: Industry. It sorts, searches, filters, groups, subtotals and takes display rules like any column. An edit shows at once on every loaded row with the same related record, as one undo step, and Save writes that record once, through the user’s own access.

Where it stops

A new row can’t set a related record’s field. An import changes the grid’s own records only, so it leaves such columns out and says why. A lookup field with a lookup filter, reached through a path, is shown but not edited. A subtotal adds the related record’s value once per row, as a report does.

FAQ

Related record’s field: questions

What happens when two rows give the same account different values?

Both are refused, nothing is written to that field, and each cell says why: “Another row changes this field on the same record to a different value.” Make them match, then save.

Why does the column show a lock on some rows?

Those rows have no related record, because the lookup is blank, or you cannot edit that record or field. An edit sent for a row with no account is refused: “This record has no Account, so Industry can’t be changed.”

Which lookups can’t be reached through?

A lookup that can point to more than one kind of record, such as a task’s Related To or an owner that can be a queue. A path that can’t work is left out with a warning rather than stopping the grid.
