What is an encrypted field?

An encrypted field is a field protected by Salesforce Shield Platform Encryption. Rowhouse shows and edits it as usual, but doesn’t sort, filter, group, search or total it.

In Salesforce

Shield Platform Encryption is a paid Salesforce add-on that encrypts chosen fields and files at rest. Because the stored value is encrypted, Salesforce restricts what queries can do with an encrypted field, so sorting, filtering, grouping and totals don’t work on it as they do on other fields.

How Rowhouse handles it

Rowhouse detects an encrypted field from Salesforce’s description of the field. Its column is shown and edited as usual; the grid doesn’t offer sort, filter, group or total on it, a search leaves it out, and a Default Sort Field on it is set aside. An admin filter on an encrypted field stops the grid and says why, since leaving the filter out would show records it was meant to hide. The Grid Edit Log records its changes without their values.

Why a filter on one stops the grid

A filter set by the admin is there to keep records out of a grid. If the grid quietly dropped a filter it could not run, it would show the very records the filter was meant to hide, so it stops instead and names the filter.

FAQ

Encrypted field: questions

Why can’t I sort or filter this column?

It is encrypted. That limit comes from how Salesforce handles encrypted fields, not from the grid. Diagnostics name each encrypted column.

Has Rowhouse been tested with Shield?

Not yet in an org with Shield turned on: no Kugamon test org has it. Encrypted fields are detected from Salesforce’s description of each field.

Free. Not freemium, not a trial, not a tier.

Install it, assign the permission sets, build your first grid on the Grid Admin tab. Everything else is in the Grid Guide inside the app.
